Niigata 12th July 1869
I. van der Tak Esqre
Agent of the Neth. Tradg Society
Yokohama
Dear Sir,
Since my last Obedient dated 3rd inst I am without any of your favors to
reply to.
As I could come to no arrangement about a charter for the Kebon Dalem, I
have despatched her to Osacca, but beg now to inform you that the governor
of this place has left a few days ago over land for Yokohama. He informed
me of his intention to arrrange with the minister of foreign affairs about
the purchase of the Str Kebon Dalem and then will settle this matter with
you.
I hope that in case you sell the ship there, you will allow me the
commission of m$ 500 which Mr. Bauduin promised to me, as indeed I have
had many troubles to push the sales of the ship.
Today I have to announce you the following sales viz.
100 pieces grey Drills at Izbs 13 pp
100 pieces Chintzes at Izbs 10 pp
30 pie: cotton yarn at Izbs 178 ppie
and I would have succeeded to sell more, if not some events had taken
place, which brought business nearly
to stand still.
On account of a refusal on the part of the Niigata merchants to
accept Kinsats at par, about 30 of the most immenent merchants had been
imprisoned, in consequence of which a sudden panic aroze in this place and
business is quite neglected.
I am imformed however, that the greater part of the merchaents will be
soon released again and hope then to effect further sales.
Str Otago large arrivals of manufactured goods have come to this market,
some of them sold at very good prizes, but at present nothing can be done,
before the Niigata merchants are put at liberty again.
Your grey Lastres, which I sold at Izbs 31 3/4 pp were not according to
sample and invoice, and I had to make the purchaser a bonification on the
same. Enclosed I beg to hand you copy of a document, which will no doubt
enable you to recover the loss from the fabricant.
The Kedar is about half loaded and it seems that the japanese find many
difficulties in gathering the rice.
I am
Dear sir
yours faithfully
A.R.Weber
